4 Key Characteristics To Look For In College Student Sports Management Job Candidates

By Christy Flom on May 11, 2015

Sports seem to have a universal language of their own. With stats instantly available online and so many social networking sites that allow fans to connect all over the nation and world, sports of all types and definitions encompass the passions of millions of people every day.

However, the combination of work and sports is a task that even the biggest fan may not be able to professionally handle. While fans are hugely important to the continued success of the sports industry, simply knowing the stats of your favorite basketball or baseball player is not enough for many careers.

Obviously, having an impressive knowledge of all sports, like the different teams and extraordinary players and coaches, is a tremendous help in many fields of employment. But, in particular, sports management requires several key characteristics in the employees that succeed.

Leader: In order to garner clients and efficiently manage a player, team, or organization, the student candidate you hire must be a natural leader. This means that they will always be on the lookout for new opportunities to prove themselves as hard workers. They will take hold of situations rather than stand by to let someone else deal with difficult matters.

Under such a broad field of sports management, this quality can be transitive to many careers, from coaching an NFL team to being a Public Relations executive for a recruiting agency.

Being a leader means they are not afraid to fight for what they want, but know when to pull back after crossing a line. They must not only lead by example but help others lead, too, which brings up the next necessary quality of a sports management worker.

Dependable: Leaders stand by their clients, stand by their fellow workers and stand by their teams. Part of being a leader is being dependable. Good client relations and employer relations begin with being a dependable worker. This means being reliable with projects and meetings. It means being punctual to arrangements and gatherings and always being prepared.

For sports jobs this is especially important. Recruiting agencies rely heavily on the personalities of their employees to maximize potential clientele. This is why when looking to hire someone for a sports management position, dependability should be a top quality noticeable in the candidates.

Optimistic: This may sound like a no brainer but it needs to be emphasized. In the sports world, employees need to be go-getters with a fantastic attitude. It’s not every day that people get to work one-on-one with professional athletes, coaches, or teams from a variety of aspects. Sports management recruiters need to search for that new college student freshly ignited with a drive to work hard and make a difference.

If employees are not optimistic about their work and their own future, then athletes will be pessimistic about their future with that company. In an age where appearance is everything, these employees need to appear and be optimistic and energetic.

Outgoing: As our final quality of the day, sports management requires employees who are not afraid to put themselves out there, meet new people and try new things.

When dealing with athletes, sports managers will get a spew of personalities from the seasoned divas to the way too eager rookies. In sports management, the employees need to be confident and extroverted people who can handle these athletes.

These qualities are easily recognizable and are important deciding factors for choosing the best candidate. College students represent a fantastic talent pool and finding the right one could drastically change your business.
