7 Summer Outings Your College Employees Will Appreciate

By Francine Fluetsch on June 15, 2015

It’s summertime, which means employees are going to dread being stuck inside working more than usual. To keep them entertained and show them that work can be fun too, you could plan some fun outings to help your employees bond, which enhances teamwork, and will show them that your company cares about their well-being.

Here are 7 ideas for fun summer outings to plan with your college employees.

1. The beach

Everyone loves the beach, and this doesn’t require any sort of reserving on your part. As long as everyone has a ride, you’re all set. Invite your employees to bring finger food to share, and maybe have them bring some boogie boards if they have them and some equipment for sandcastles. You are never too old for a sand castle. A nice outing to the beach will be a wonderful contrast to the office life, and will help them get some energy out to then focus better at work. It will be an awesome bonding experience where everyone will feel relaxed.

You could even plan it later in the day so you can enjoy the ocean while it’s still somewhat warm, and then once it gets dark, you all can have a bonfire and roast marshmallows. Make sure that the beach allows bonfires if you go for this option. And don’t forget the sunscreen during the day.

2. Water park

What two age groups love water parks? Little kids and college students. Water parks can be a fun way to get some “typical summer fun” and bonding time. I mean if I got to see my boss go down a water slide, I think it would make my day. There are different kinds of water parks, so just make sure that the rides are not just for little kids. Most of these places aren’t that pricey either, so you can have a fun outing without hurting your wallet too much.

3. Picnic

Everyone loves food and enjoying the great outdoors. Why not have a picnic in your local park? You could make it a theme picnic by asking everyone to bring their favorite dish that they learned from their parents or something, and let everyone learn a bit more about each other, enjoy good food, and good company. The great thing about a picnic is it doesn’t have to last very long, so you can get the bonding time you need without having to deal with awkward silences of an all day hangout.

4. Hike

If you have a more adventurous, athletic bunch on your hands, why not take them for a hike? This doesn’t have to be some crazy 20-mile hike or anything, you can gauge what level they would feel comfortable with, and that you wouldn’t mind doing of course. Most college kids like hikes that are worth the pain of it, like hiking to a secluded lake or a gorgeous view. That will give them something to look forward to, and will tucker them out. And hey, if anyone gets poison oak along the way, it will make for a great office story later.

5. Fro-yo

You know what tastes absolutely amazing on a hot day? Frozen yogurt! Taking your employees to Yogurtland or another yogurt shop will give them a fun and healthy treat to look forward to. Fro-yo always hits the spot, and it would be a quick and easy outing for you to take them on.

6. Help the community

A lot of students are really down to help out their community; it makes them feel good and looks good on their resumes, so why not have them vote on a few causes to help out on and take a few weekends out of the month to hold the events/help out with them.

You could do things like helping animals get adopted, cleaning up the beaches, having a PB&J drive for the homeless: the possibilities are endless. This will be a fun way for your employees to bond and to give back.

7. Road trip

Everyone loves a good road trip. Now I know you may be thinking a road trip would be very involved, but you don’t have to go far to make it fun! Maybe you could drive to a local lake and hang out there for the day, or have a camping weekend at a campground nearby. Even driving for 45 minutes to a place a lot of people haven’t been before is an adventure. Camping is definitely a way for people to get to know one another better, and they will have tons of great stories to share in the office.

These are just a few of the many fun outings you could plan for your college employees this summer. It doesn’t have to be crazy and it doesn’t have to be expensive, it just has to be something out of the ordinary from the typical workday!
