How to Show Millennials They'll Fit in at Your Company

By Kaitlin Hurtado on July 31, 2018

Maybe your company is not attracting as many millennial workers as you would have liked. Or, maybe the millennial workers you have worked with have shown low satisfaction with the position they have filled or with the workplace itself. Whatever the case is, you might want to reconsider how millennial workers view your workplace prior to working there and while they are working there.

You do not want to come across what you would think is the perfect fit for a specific position or your company, only to have them feel like they do not belong at your company. You want your millennial workers to feel like they have a place in your company, and that they have the ability to contribute in some way. In order to attract, and keep the millennial workers you have already hired, to your workplace, here are some things you can do to show your millennial workers that they will fit in at your company.

Take time to show them around the workplace

Think of how uninviting it would be to show someone to their desk on their first day and leave it to them to figure things out on their own. Instead, you want to make sure that millennial workers get to know their workplace and have a guide to begin with as they get used to their new workplace.

This can be as simple as a walkthrough of the main floor they are going to be looking at: restrooms, breakroom, meeting rooms, their higher-ups’ offices, and more. The better they are able to have a sense of what their workplace looks like and where things are, the better and more secure they will feel when it comes to navigating the workplace on their own. It gives them a chance to ask questions, and will help eliminate those first-day-of-school butterflies that may come up at the thought of getting lost on their first day of work, or worse, being late to their first big meeting as a result of not knowing where anything is located.

Anyone can help with giving a tour – a hiring manager, their future manager, or even someone they will often work with or has worked in their position. Being shown around by someone that has been in their position, or is currently in their position, will go a long way in showing millennial workers that they will fit in at your company. They will feel more comfortable asking questions, and will be more likely to form a personal connection with someone taking the time to help walk them around on their first day.

While showing millennial workers around, you can also let them know about different events that take place around the workplace. Events revolving around social efforts and not just professional talk will allow millennial workers to personally connect to their workplace and coworkers.

Emphasize a workplace that encourages growth for its workers

When it comes to millennial workers, they are most likely coming into one of their first full-time jobs. There is a large chance that they will have a limited amount of experience when it comes to full-time jobs and varying expectations of their workplace. They most likely won’t be keeping their first few jobs for the rest of the careers, but you do want to keep your millennial workers satisfied and comfortable while they are still employees at your workplace for as long as possible.

When it comes to the types of workplace that millennial workers want to work at, they are few phrases that often come out during conversation, such as “growth.” As many millennial workers are at the beginning of their career, you want to keep in tune with millennial workers that are looking to start their career at your company. They are not coming into the position having knowledge of everything they are expected to do, most likely, and it is important to let them know they can expect a learning atmosphere in their workplace.

Let your millennial workers that they are allowed to ask questions, encouraged even, when they do not know something or would like more information on specific tasks or topics. Keep on dismantling the thought that asking questions isn’t encouraged and they are expected to knowing everything coming into the job.

You want to encourage your millennial workers to grow while being employees at your company. This can be in the form of encouraging questions, or in the form of letting millennial workers know there is room to move up in the company through future promotions so that they know they can have a stable future in the company.

Take an extra step to let your millennial workers that they will fit in at their company. Don’t just verbally tell them, but physically show them around their new workplace – a place where they can gain valuable experience and guidance, and contribute to the growth of your company while doing so. Encourage their own growth for their own careers as they take part in your company, as well as showing there is the possibility of future opportunities if they choose to pursue them.
